How does it work?
Choosing the perfect frame is a journey! Let us go through the process of how we collaborate together on a framing solution that works best for you.
Framing consultation can either happen in-store, in which case you should bring your piece with you. Or we can bring the framing experience to you.. with our at-home consultation service!
Step 1: Choosing the moulding.
Mouldings offer protection and holds everything together, but also contributes toward the overall look of the frame. The moulding is the shape that the profile of the frame has. Mouldings come in different shapes, sizes and finishes. With over 400 mouldings from which to choose, the possibilities are potentially endless!
Step 2: Choosing the mount board
Sometimes the artwork can be enhanced by adding a mountboard (or matboard) which either offers some “breathing space” around the piece between the work and the frame, or it accents a colour to add a little “pop”. Mountboards are classified in 3 ways:
Class 3 Traditional mountboards are ideal for decorative framing and has a cellulose centre. These mountboards can offer a wide range of wonderful colours from which to choose, and are pH neutral.
Class 2 Conservation grade which are acid and lignin free. These are a great option for original pieces that require an element of extra protection if on special paper, for instance.
Class 1 Our museum quality mount boards are made of 100% cotton and are naturally acid and lignin free. These mountboards are used for original artworks, which are historic and often/potentially fragile.
Frames can be made with single mountboards, 2 mountboards or multiple mountboards - the choice is entirely yours!
Step 3: Choosing the glass
Most often, 2mm clear glass is selected as it is cost effective, and does what it needs to do … protect your framed item.
If it is in a very light room with lots of reflections, Art Glass can make a fabulous alternative as it reduces the reflections by up to 70%.
The most expensive and most protective of all the glasses is the Museum grade which offers up to 90% reflection reduction but also has a UV protection.
Step 4: Let us do the rest!
After choosing all the components for your frame leave it to us to put it all together for you. Turn-around time for framing is 5 - 10 working days and we will get in touch with you as soon as it's ready! You can either collect your masterpiece, or we can deliver to you (rates are quoted per project and location).

Framing has been around since the 2nd century BC (a very long time ago!). Back then, frames were simply drawn borders around Etruscan cave paintings and borders in ancient Egyptian and Greek art to divide scenes.
The first carved wooden frames, as we know them today, appeared much later in the 12th and 13th centuries in Europe. According to a historical series published in Picture Frame Magazine, these early "framed panel paintings" were made from one piece.
